Java is only fourth largest island in Indonesia but is home to 57 percent of the nation's population. Java is one of the world’s most densely populated areas. The island was the site of human activity perhaps as early as 1.5 million years ago. Java is almost entirely of volcanic origin; it contains thirty-eight mountains forming an east–west spine that have at one time or another been active volcanoes. Its climate is generally hot and humid throughout the year.
